  What is the SBS?

The School of Biblical Studies (SBS) - 66 Books in 9 Months

The SBS is an exciting journey through all the books of the Bible. You get to know them and you are trained in proper interpretation of the Bible. The approach of the SBS is though different  to other bible schools:

  • Study the Bible for yourself. The content of the course is not lectures about the Bible, but the Bible itself. The student is not only learning what others are saying about the Bible, but mainly what the Bible itself is saying.
  • Study the Bible for yourself. The emphasis is on selfstudy. The student shall not hear from others but discover himself what the Bible is saying.
  • Study the whole Bible for yourself. Maybe the most unusual aspect of the SBS is, that the whole nine months program consists "only" of studying the whole Bible book by book for oneself.

The Inductive Study Method

The SBS is built on the inductive study method. This means we try to be listeners of Scripture; the inductive method seeks to let the Bible speak for itself, based on thorough observation of the text. For that we don't start by studying verses or paragraphs, but try to grasp the context of the whole book first. The three steps we will constantly apply are:

  • Observation: What does the text say?
  • Interpretation: What did the text mean then to the first readers?
  • Application: What does the text mean for me/us today?

We start by searching the text carefully in order to see what is there and what it actually says. In the next step we try to find out why the author made these statements and what they orginally meant to the first reader; thus we try to understand the text in it's original context. Only then we are able to also apply the text to our present (and also personal) time and situation.

During the nine months process of study you will read the books of the Bible at least five times. For every book you produce written reports in which you analize the text paragraph by paragraph. Your work will be checked by SBS staff in order to help you to interpret as good as possible and to help you improving study skills.

The emphasis of the school is on self-study of the word of God. In the lectures you will also receive teaching on additional information on books to help you with your studies. Mainly we will focus on background information and on difficult passages.

The Program of the Bible School

The SBS therefore consists of three quarters of twelve weeks each. In between quarters there is one- to two-week break. It is possible to do only the first or the first two quarters, but only in consecutive order. The content of the chapters looks as follows:

  • The first quarter of the SBS begins with an introduction to the method of inductive Bible study in the form of an intensive, three-week seminar. In the remainder of the first quarter, we study most of the books in the New Testament.
  • In the second quarter, we study the rest of the New Testament, and then start the Old Testament with Genesis through Kings.
  • The third quarter includes the remaining books of the Old Testament. The set-up of the school is not according to themes or topics, but is based on a book-by-book study of the entire Bible.

At the end of the course, you will have an overview of the content, background, historical setting and meaning of every book. You will also have a deeper insight in who God is and what his plan for mankind entails. This forms a solid foundation for a life of service in the church, missions and society.

About the School Itself

The School of Biblical Studies is full-time; meaning that the students live, work and study in our base in Wiler. There are lectures approximately three mornings per week (at the beginning of the school and during seminars there will be more). Much of the school consists of independent studies. We value a "balanced" Christian lifestyle and so alongside the studies, each student will be part of base life including times of intercession, worship, meals, outings, celebrations, two hours of practical work, etc. The school will be hold bilingual English / German.

An example for two typical weekly schedules you find here (pdf 15 KB).

Scholarship

Scholarship can normally be granted for Non-Westerners who can't afford their tuition. The quarterly reduction is 1'100 swiss francs. However, we can't guarantee any scholarship during the application process, since this is very much depending on the school situation.

Outreach

Following to our schools we sometimes provide opportunities for a two months outreach, so students would be able to pass on things they learnt. Outreach opportuinites are mainly in Romania, Bulgaria or in the Himalaya Region, but there are also some other options in discussion.

  What do past students say
  about the SBS?

"The teachings of the School of Biblical Studies have made me love the word of God. Now, having a solid foundation and adequate tools, I fervently desire  to know God more and more..."
(Brenda L., S-Korea)

"The more questions I asked inductively, the more questions I get at the end, but I experience more confidence and peace in Christ alone"
(Jane, China)

"I thought that the Bible was boring and I never read it before I came here. I had been a Christian for a long time and I was ashamed that I knew so little. I really desired to know what is in the Bible and to get my own foundation on the Word of God. Now, 9 months later, I have reached my goal and learned how to always be a Bible student. This is a great school."
(Linda H., FR)

"SBS opened my eyes to the message of the whole Bible. I read the New Testament
many times, but missed out on the full message of the Old Testament. I have a heart of worship and a greater desire to go and share this message."
(Rebecca S., USA)

"The more I study the Word the more real I desire to become with my relationship with God and people."
(Yussuf M., Nigeria)

"The SBS is perfect for anyone who has been involved in ministry for a short  or long period of time, because your passion for God and the Word will be renewed. Your calling will be sharpened in such a way that you will be better equipped to reach the world with the Gospel!"
(David S., USA)

"The way I read the Bible will indeed never be the same again!"
(Leocadia K., Singapore)

"SBS is a great foundation for any occupation in life. You get a complete Bible overview in its original context which is uncommon even in most seminaries. I'd recommend this school to Christians no matter where they are in their spiritual walk."
(Zachary F., USA)
